Parks and Environmental Commission Regular Meeting Minutes <br />March 4, 2024 <br />Page 2 <br />1 There were 467,000 guests in the park in 2023. Ms. Baguss passed out some information to <br />2 the Commissioners. <br />3 <br />4 Chair Fee stated there has been great community outreach on the importance of Silverwood <br />5 Park to the community. The Three Rivers Park District Board Meeting will be held March 21, <br />6 2024 and all are invited to attend. <br />7 <br />B.8 Citizens for Sustainability Updates. <br />9 <br />10 Citizens for Sustainability Representative Dan Kunitz presented a Power Point presentation <br />11 including a Welcome to New Commissioners and Earth Week Parks Cleanup. Interested <br />12 residents can sign up for meeting reminders and local events at <br />13 http://citizensforsustainability.org. <br />14 <br />15 Commissioners are invited to join in planning and overseeing the cleanup efforts. <br />16 Commissioners Holiday and Guest volunteered. Other Commissioners interested should <br />17 contact Dan Kunitz. <br />18 <br />19 Citizens for Sustainability are hosting an irregular book club intended for families including <br />20 children’s books. <br />21 <br />22 A letter was received from a member of Citizens for Sustainability asking the Parks and <br />23 Environmental Commission to look at the Ordinance surrounding permeable pavers. The <br />24 letter was distributed to the Commissioners. It was from Paul White. Commissioner Holiday <br />25 asked if Mr. Kunitz has brought the letter to the Planning Commission as they would need to <br />26 review it as well. Mr. Kunitz stated he is just presenting it since Paul White could not be in <br />27 attendance. Mr. Yunker stated this should go to City Engineer as a starting point. <br />28 <br />29 Mr. Gumke stated Public Works has supported Parks Clean-Up Day by providing supplies <br />30 and tools and picking up the full bags on Monday Morning. Mr. Kunitz needs to let Mr. <br />31 Gumke know what is needed and where it should be delivered. <br />32 <br />33 VI.COMMISSION REPORTS. <br />34 <br />35 Commissioner Swiontek had no report. <br />36 <br />37 Commissioner Holiday thanked Mr. Gumke and Public Works for the cardboard collection <br />38 after the holidays. It was extremely helpful. He asked about the pile of salt in the public works <br />39 area and what savings have come from the lack of a winter. He noticed trees being cut down. <br />40 Mr. Gumke stated he will report on the salt at the next meeting in his annual report. The trees <br />41 being cut down in Central Park are part of the Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan. <br />42 <br />43 Commissioner Guest stated he also appreciated the cardboard collection and believes it should <br />44 be a monthly event. He asked if the City makes money from the recycling and Mr. Gumke <br />45 stated it does not. It is part of the waste hauler contract and will be done in January and July <br />46 each year.
