City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
December 13, 2005
Page 6
2 Michael Moray, no address given, stated the personal attention that Limu Coffee provides is
3 important. He asked if it is legal to raise rent by 75%.
4
5 Mrs. Moray, no address given, stated she is concerned about calling the City a village when it
6 seems like it is becoming more corporate. She added she can go to Caribou anywhere but cannot
7 go to Limu Coffee unless she is open.
8
9 Murray Heffron, 3100 32nd Avenue NE, stated he is concerned with what is happening to Limu
10 Coffee and that it appears independent small businesses are not welcome in that development.
11
12 Greg, 2938 Cleveland Street, stated although he is not a customer of Limu Coffee, he encouraged
13 Council to meet with or send a letter to the developer.
14
15 Tom Gates, 3425 Wilshire Place NE, stated small businesses have always been great places and
16 it would be a shame if Limu Coffee closes. He added the landlord has gone from no deal to
17 100% rent increase to a 75% rent increase. He suggested Council meet with the developer in the
18 hopes she is allowed to compete on a fair basis.
19
20 Rachel Huss, 3224 Croft Drive, asked how does letting Caribou take over Limu live up to the
21 City's mission statement.
22
23 Jeff Krause, 3501 Skycroft Drive, stated he does not know who to go to for this. He does not
24 think the issue is big versus small businesses. He believes Council's job is to see that fair and
25 equitable business deals are happening in the community that represent the values of people in
26 the community. He added New Brighton has contacted Limu Coffee and expressed concern and
27 welcomed them into their community but he is not sure St. Anthony has done the same. Mayor
28 Faust replied this is probably the place to come to when residents have no other avenue, but
29 Council may or may not have legal authority. He added he heard the New Brighton rumor and
30 after asking questions believes this is false. Mr. Mornson replied he checked with the City of
31 New Brighton and they have denied this.
32
33 Judson Haverkamp, 57 16th Avenue SW, New Brighton, stated he has always valued the
34 community spirit and closeness. He added lets maintain support for small businesses and
35 support for the community.
36
37 Scott Eckman, 3509 Skycroft Drive, stated friends asked him to reach out and demonstrate a
38 commitment of caring. - He noted he hopes everyone cares about a community that is committed
39 to treating businesses fairly as members of the community. He added he hopes Council can
40 focus on fairness and provide a venue to residents when they do not know where else to turn.
41
42 Lyle Payette, 3200 Roosevelt, requested Council research if a developer has a tenant already
43 designated to put them where Limu Coffee currently is. Mayor Faust replied he does not know if
44 anyone is designated to come in.
45
46 Dave Huss, 3 520 Highcrest Road, asked if Council has any leverage over the developer. He
47 asked if the developer has any previous discrimination violations of charging one business a
9
