Hugo City Council Meeting Minutes for July 14, 2014
Page 2 of 8
Donation of Tracked Wheel Chair to the Yellow Ribbon Network — Jerry Moerke
Yellow Ribbon Network Update
A loyal business sponsor of the Welcome Home Pheasant Hunt Jerry Moerke was present with
his son. Jerry is an avid member of Wildwings who knows someone who makes chairs for the
disabled to hunt. Jerry recently sold his business and wanted to give back to the community by
donating an $16,000 tracked motorized wheelchair so handicapped veterans can participate in
outdoor activities. The City Council expressed their appreciation for the donation and
recognized how much the use of the chair will mean to our wounded warriors.
Council Members Klein and Haas provided an update on the Yellow Ribbon Network. The
YRN received a flag that was flown over the base in Afghanistan and a Certificate of
Appreciation for the work of the YRN. Haas showed pictures from a ceremony for a Coronal
and the Norwegian exchange program trip. The YRN assisted an Air Force veteran to get to his
medical appointment through a MN Disabled Veterans program. An unemployed veteran was
connected to necessary programs to assist him. A female veterans group is having a retreat at the
Vets camp ground on Big Marine Lake. The YRN helped a Gold Star Mom get a flag for a
soldier's family. Xcel energy was last month's Hamburger Night Sponsor. This month's sponsor
will be Wilson Tool. A kennel was found for a military family's dogs to be taken care of for a
few weeks. A Washington County YRN picnic meeting will be held next Wednesday. A $900
donation was received from Mark Schwope. Mark is also a pheasant hunt field sponsor, and he
will sponsor Hamburger Night in August.
Special Event Permit for Hugo Lions Club Circus on July 26 & 27, 2014 — Pete Pedersen
The Hugo Lions Club is sponsoring the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus at Lions Park on
Saturday June 26 and Sunday, June 27. Lions Club Member Pete Pedersen explained that this
will be the fourth time the circus has visited Hugo. Performances will be held at 2 and 4:30 p.m.
each day. Tickets are available at Sager's Liquor and the Holiday Station Store. The Lions Club
will receive approximately $2,000 in proceeds that will be used for scholarships. Pete requested
Council approve the Special Event Permit for the Circus.
Haas made motion, Klein seconded, to approve the Special Event Permit for the Hugo Lions
Clubs circus event on June 26 & 27, 2014.
All Ayes.
