Hugo City Council Minutes for December 15, 2008 <br />Page 5 of 11 <br />Congressional Fire Services Institute Certificates of Recognition for Fire Chief Jim Compton and <br />Deputy Chief Jadon 011ila — Congresswoman Michele Bachman <br />City staff was contacted a few months ago by Congresswoman Michele Bachman with an to opportunity <br />to recognize members of the Hugo Fire Department. Staff submitted an application which was <br />forwarded on to the Congressional Fire Services Institute and was successful in getting Certificates of <br />Recognition for Fire Chief Jim Compton, Deputy Chief Jadon 011ila, Assistant Fire Chief Marty <br />Schwartz, and Training Officer Kevin Colvard for their leadership in responding to the May 25, 2008 <br />tornado disaster. Congresswoman Michele Bachman was present at the Council meeting, and she <br />introduced to the Council and audience her husband Marcus. The Congresswoman explained they <br />together run two mental health clinics and can relate to what the fire department was experiencing as an <br />aftermath of the traumatic events on and the days following the May 25th tornado. Congresswoman <br />Michele Bachman said she often referred to Hugo as the "best run city in the state", and she was <br />honored to be there to thank those who went beyond the call of duty during the tornado. <br />Congresswoman Michele Bachman and Mayor Fran Miron made an official presentation of the <br />Certificates of Recognition to Fire Chief Jim Compton, Deputy Chief Jadon 011ila, Training/Safety <br />Officer Kevin Colvard, and Assistant Chief Marty Schwartz. <br />Certificates of Recognition for Exemplary Actions - Hugo Fire Department - Congresswoman <br />Michele Bachman <br />On May 25, 2008, the City of Hugo was hit by an EF3 tornado with winds of more than 165 miles per <br />hour followed by a horrendous hail storm with high winds. Twenty-eight members of the Hugo Fire <br />Department responded that day in an extra -ordinary emergency response situation. The firefighters <br />provided residents with comfort and safety, removing many from their homes and garages and <br />evacuating them to safety at Oneka Elementary School. In appreciation and recognition of the heroic <br />efforts of the Hugo Firefighters, Congresswoman Michele Bachman and Mayor Fran Miron presented <br />the following members of the Hugo Fire Department with a Certificate of Recognition for their extra- <br />ordinary actions in the emergency response in the City of Hugo on Sunday, May 25, 2008: Anthony <br />Angell, Tony Bronk, Bill Buystedt, Jake Christiansen, Michael Childs, Andrew Churchill, Kevin <br />Colvard, Jim Compton Sr., Jim Compton Jr., Gina Duncanson, Pat Dunn, James Fordham, Russ <br />Frantum, Ron Gray, Jodie Guareschi, Bryan Harris, David Jensen, Nicholas Johnson, Todd Jones, Mark <br />Koll, Tim Lorinser, Bryan Lund, Michael McCorkel, Jadon 011ila, Scott Peterson, Donald Sames, Marty <br />Schwartz, and Jesse Seering. <br />Mayor Fran Miron recessed the Council meeting for approximately 30 minutes to allow the Council and <br />meeting attendees to have cake in the lobby in honor of the fire department and in recognition of retiring <br />Parks Commission Member Pete Pedersen and Council Members Mike Granger and Frank Puleo <br />Recognition of Retirement of Parks Commissioner Pete Pedersen <br />Pete Pedersen has submitted his letter of resignation to the City of Hugo completing his final term on the <br />Parks and Recreation Commission which expires on December 31, 2008. As Council is aware, Pete was <br />an original and charter member of the Hugo Parks and Recreation Commission, which was created by <br />the Hugo City Council in 1998. With the completion of the original Parks Master Plan by the City of <br />Hugo in 1998, Pete has worked diligently to implement the Plan and create the parks department that the <br />City enjoys today. Pete was instrumental in creation of a number of neighborhood parks including <br />Lions Park, Beaver Ponds, Oneka Lake Park, Diamond Point Park, Clearwater Creek Preserve, Hugo <br />
