Originally proposed by the City Council on orr�tite�oid�coe.Squar�MatLs+ <br /> February 13,2001 it was formally designated in a <br /> joint meeting of the City Council and Economic <br /> Development Authority on March 28,2001, and <br /> followed by creation of a redevelopment tax incre- <br /> ment district on July 26,2001. The redevelopment �► <br /> district includes all four quadrants of the Highway <br /> 61/80"'Street interchange which included 506,674 <br /> square feet of retail and office buildings in addition to rug {: 0.1 i • q ei <br /> public properties and a small amount of residential <br /> property at the time of District creation. <br /> Creation of the Redevelopment District was intended _to signal to property owners,and others,the City's - <br /> intent to pursue redevelopment activities within the <br /> district as opportunities arise. Further, creation of Norris Square Senior Housing Project <br /> the smaller tax increment district is intended to <br /> provide a financing mechanism for public <br /> expenditures associated with infrastructure construction or land acquisition within the project area. <br /> In 2003 the City began preparing for redevelopment of the southwest quadrant of the district as redevelopment on the east <br /> side was underway. The planned for razing and redevelopment of the former 84,000 square foot Cottage Square <br /> Shopping Center began in 2006. This 14 acre site is under development in 2007 with construction of the 146 unit Senior <br /> Housing community under construction on the south six acres of the site.
