Hugo City Council Meeting Minutes for February 7, 2022 <br />Page 7 of 10 <br /> <br /> <br />Miron made motion, Klein seconded, to approve RESOLUTION 2022-7 APPROVING A <br />VARIANCE TO ALLOW CONSTRUCTION OF A HOUSE WITHIN THE SHORELAND <br />AND FRONT YARD SETBACK REQUIREMENT OF SUNSET LAKE FOR THE <br />PROPERTY GENERALLY LOCATED NORTH OF 122ND STREET AND WEST OF <br />INGERSOLL AVENUE. <br /> <br />Ayes-Klein, Miron, Petryk, Weidt <br />Abstain-Strub <br />Motion carried. <br /> <br />Approve 2022 City Focus Goals and Ongoing Priorities <br /> <br />The Council held a workshop on Monday, January, 2022, to establish goals for the year. City <br />Administrator Bryan Bear provided a recap of the workshop and the main discussions regarding <br />staffing of the Hugo Fire Department and COVID cash. Council had reviewed goals proposed <br />by staff and various commissions <br /> <br />Klein made motion, Miron seconded, to approve the Goals and Ongoing Priorities for 2022. <br /> <br />All Ayes. Motion carried. <br /> <br />Update on Hopkins Schoolhouse <br /> <br />The Hopkins Schoolhouse Committee had recently met to discuss the future of the Hopkins <br />Schoolhouse. City Clerk Michele Lindau provided background, and City Administrative talked <br />about recent discussions regarding the schoolhouse. A Conditions Assessment done by New <br />Studio Architects estimated a cost of approximately $575,000 to preserve and prepare the <br />building for temporary construction, and an additional $400,00-$500,000 for final use, <br />depending on what the use would be. The Hopkins Schoolhouse Committee had met twice over <br />the past month, and there was some preference to see the building saved. The Committee also <br />acknowledged there was a pressing need to fix the roof, and there was no funding source. <br /> <br />Committee Member Cindy Petty said most of the Committee would like to see it saved. She <br />talked about Justin Brink from the Forest Lake Historical Society who she said was well <br />connected and seemed to have contacts who could do some grant writing. She said there needed <br />to be community engagement. <br /> <br />Committee Member Matt Derr said there had been a lot of varied opinions, and if money was no <br />object, it would be nice to have, but they needed to keep the dollar figure in mind. <br /> <br />Council Member Miron, who also served on the committee, talked about it being a complicated <br />process, and there were a lot of “what ifs” with no funding mechanism in place. He agreed <br />there needed to be an outside group to take over, and if a group was formed, they should touch <br />base with the Council prior to doing anything. <br /> <br />Council discussed the difficulty of justifying the use of taxpayer dollars on the building but <br />agreed something needed to be done.
