FINAL DELIVERABLE : HSHC 6
The research on operational activities for competitors showed that half of the organizations
charge an admissions fee to tour the attraction or to take part in a group activity. Admission fees to visit
the attractions range from $3 to $7 per person. The organizations that included group activities for school
children charged an average of $5 per student, with a minimum group size of 10 students. The teacher
bringing the group was not charged admission, but each additional chaperone typically was. Therefore,
we recommend charging a $5 per person admission fee to visit the museum. For the group activities, we
recommend charging $5 per person for small groups, and a discounted group rate of $4 per student for
groups of 10 or more students, with free admission to teachers.
Organizations with similar setups have had success with continued interest in visiting their
museums through changing the displays semi-annually. Displays can be changed to depict different
themes, and artifacts not on display can be stored to preserve integrity and prolong usage.
Gathering Spaces
In our research, we found that there is a need for gathering spaces in Hugo, Forest Lake, and
neighboring cities. These spaces can be used by residents, visitors to the area, city council members, and
community groups. Gathering spaces can be used to host group meetings, events, and parties. Bigger
events would potentially include wedding events. We recommend the gathering space at the Hopkins
Schoolhouse and Heritage Center be available for use unless otherwise occupied by the schoolhouse staff.
We recommend Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center charge different rates depending on
the day of the week, the time of day, the renter, and the type of event. Throughout our research, we have
found that other gathering spaces charge higher rates during the weekends and in the early morning or
evenings. We also recommend charging more for nonresidents and private events which may require more
space or additional amenities.
Our research findings lead us to conclude a $200 rental fee for 2-hour use of the space would be
in line with competitor rates. Amenities we believe will help the schoolhouse stand out from other
gathering spaces include wifi, TVs, projectors, a coffee bar, a mini kitchen, several round tables, and
Page 52 of 89
