FINAL DELIVERABLE : HSHC 13
community groups. The first is attracting student and daycare groups to the museum to take part in group
activities, and the second is the use of the museum as a gathering space for a rental fee.
The first opportunity is attracting classes from the local elementary schools and local daycare
groups to participate in group activities at the museum. A goal can be made of attracting two groups to
visit per day, for at least 3 days per week, over a total period of 12 weeks throughout the year (6 in the
spring and 6 in the fall). If an average group size of 12 children visits, with the proposed discount rate of
$4 per visitor, a projected revenue of $3,456 can be generated by the end of the year. As the number of
volunteers, support, and community interest increases, more opportunities for these student group
activities can be created.
The second opportunity is the use of the schoolhouse as a gathering space for local community
groups. If the schoolhouse is rented out 1 day per week, for 2 hours (at $100/hour), the revenue is
projected to be $10,400. The use of the museum as a gathering space provides an opportunity to increase
interest in the museum and fills a need in the community.
The two projected revenues combined result in annual revenue of $13,456. This total can be
compared to revenue generated from admission fees to the museum and membership dues collected by the
organization. When support can be generated to attract funding of at least $2000 in membership dues
from individuals and business sponsors, and $500 in admission fees from visiting the museum, the
resulting total of nearly $16000 puts the organization in a comparable position to more established
historical societies.
The research has indicated that despite successful operational activities, historical societies still
rely on grants to supplement their income. Isanti County Historical Society and Afton Heritage Museum
have successfully received grants from the Minnesota Historical Society through legacy funds sourced
from the state government to help with emergent needs in their organizations. The Isanti County
Historical Society received a grant recently to help replace records and archives lost due to a fire. The
Afton Heritage Museum received a grant to help with the restoration of part of the museum. The Hopkins
Schoolhouse and Heritage Center can apply for grants from the Minnesota State Legislature and the
Page 59 of 89
