FINAL DELIVERABLE : HSHC 15
Competitor Analysis
Our market research of similarly positioned organizations demonstrates that each historical
society has its distinctive features, captivating exhibits, and diverse funding sources. Some of the
organizations present a wide range of activities and services, including hosting weddings, orchestrating
day camps, and hosting special events. Others focus their efforts on delivering immersive tours,
compelling exhibits, and robust educational programs. A consistent thread across these organizations is
the reliance on contributions, grants, and membership fees as primary sources of funding. Furthermore,
many of these organizations offer membership opportunities, spanning from twenty-five dollars to five
hundred dollars, thereby fostering deeper community engagement and support. Moreover, a noticeable
trend among these organizations is that the majority of their revenue stems from public support in the
form of donations, highlighting the strong commitment and appreciation from their communities.
In our analysis, we noted two organizations that provide an opportunity for the Hopkins
Schoolhouse to position itself. Scott County Historical Society and Dakota City Heritage Village exhibit
higher program service revenues stemming from operations centered around a museum component. This
suggests a high level of visitor engagement resulting in higher revenue through a dynamic range of
activities and experiences. These two organizations actively engage with school groups and offer a variety
of workshops and guided tours. These findings provide insights into the local museum market, shedding
light on the unique strengths and potential areas of growth for Hopkin Schoolhouse.
